Alabama Rep. Robert Aderholt presented legislation on Thursday to make it legal for low-income food stamp recipients take drug tests in order to maintain their benefits.

This bill would aid fellow Republicans such as Wisconsin and its leader, Republican Governor Scott Walker.

Governor Walker’s administration has filed a lawsuit against the Agriculture Department because they claim federal law restricts this practice.

At this time, the federal government states that law prohibits imposing new standards for eligibility. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was quoted as saying, “Drug testing recipients is intrusive and ineffective.”

Aderholt is the Chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees spending for the Agriculture Department, which supervises the food stamp program.
