FLORENCE–A Florence attorney has posted $100,000 bail on charges of 1st-degree rape and 1st-degree sodomy.

Authorities tell the Shoals Insider,  65-year-old attorney Donald Glenn Tipper surrendered himself Tuesday afternoon to the Lauderdale County Detention Center, where he immediately posted bail of $100,000.

The Alabama Attorney General Division of Criminal Trials presented evidence to a Lauderdale County grand jury, resulting in Tipper’s indictment on February 1.

No further information about the investigation or about Tipper’s alleged crimes other than that stated in the indictment may be released at this time.

If convicted, Tipper faces a maximum penalty of 10 years to 99 years or life imprisonment for each of the charges, which are class A felonies.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorneys General Bill Lisenby and Stephanie Billingslea of the Attorney General’s Criminal Trials Division and was investigated by the Florence Police Department and Special Agents of the Attorney General’s Investigations Division.

Tipper is being represented by prominent Tuscumbia attorney Billy Underwood.

When contacted, Underwood stated, “No matter what, Don Tipper’s life is ruined from this day forward. A victory in court does not exonerate him in the eyes of the public because everyone knows 50% will say he did rape the victim and 50% will say that he was exonerated,”

Underwood concluded, “His ability to practice law has ended. I hope that after a trial there will be some satisfaction with a not guilty verdict,”
