Authorities have confirmed to Shoals Insider that two men have died as a result of a possible murder-suicide in a Sheffield neighborhood.

On Tuesday, July 2nd, at approximately 10PM, the Sheffield Police Department was dispatched to the 500 block of Wilson Dam Avenue for a possible suicide.

When officers arrived, they found Tommy Ray Burcham 43, of Tuscumbia, lying face down in the grass in an open field across from the residence with two gunshot wounds from a .44 caliber handgun that was found nearby.

During further investigation, officers were notified of another gunshot victim inside the residence. Officers found Raleigh Samuel Lemaster 34, of Sheffield, deceased from a single gunshot wound from an AR rifle that was found under a box fan inside the home.

It was reported that both parties involved were close friends and had gotten into a disagreement, “possibly over a woman,” said Sheffield Police Chief Ricky Terry.

‘The two men had also worked together,’ said Chief Terry.

This is being investigated as a murder-suicide. All information and evidence collected at the scene will be turned over to the Colbert County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities have identified the two people that died in a two-vehicle crash on Tuesday on Florence Boulevard.

According to FPD Sgt. Ryan Kelly at approximately 4:08 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024., members of the Florence Police, Florence Fire Department, Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department, and Lifeguard EMS responded to the intersection of Florence Boulevard and Sweetwater Avenue to a crash that took the lives of two individuals.

Victims of the crash were David Terry, 53, a twenty-six-year veteran of the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department, and Dawn Buchanan, 57, of Florence.

The preliminary investigation indicates Buchanan was traveling east on Florence Boulevard when a vehicle coming off Sweetwater Avenue failed to yield the right of way. Buchanan swerved, losing control of her vehicle. Buchanan’s vehicle crossed over the median into the westbound lanes of Florence Boulevard, colliding with Terry’s vehicle. David Terry and Dawn Buchanan were pronounced deceased at the scene by Lauderdale Coroner Kim Jones.

Raphael Dominique Vaughn, 33, was arrested and charged with Trafficking in illegal drugs (Fentanyl), Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Vaughn is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on a $52,000 bond.

Authorities have arrested a man in the shooting death of his wife.

On Tuesday, at around 8:00 a.m., Lauderdale County deputies responded to the 4000 block of County Rd 10, north of the Cloverdale community on a welfare check.

Once on scene deputies located a deceased female inside a residence. The female had died of an apparent gunshot wound. This according to Lauderdale County Sheriff Joe Hamilton.

During the investigation probable cause was established to charge William Cornelius Chapin II, 63, of Florence, with Murder.

Chapin is currently at the Lauderdale County Detention Center under no bond. This is customary under Aniah’s Law which allows violent offenders to be held without bail.

The victim is identified as Debra Annette Chapin, 59, of Florence. Her body has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” said Sheriff Hamilton.

On Friday, July 22, 2022, Samuel Brycin Fuqua, 26 of Muscle Shoals, was taken into custody and detained as a suspect in the shooting incident of a 22yr old female victim at 812 6th St in Muscle Shoals, AL. The events that lead to the detention of Samuel Fuqua are as follows:

On July 22, 2022 Officers with the Muscle Shoals Police Department were dispatch to 810 6th St. in reference to a female with a gunshot wound. Muscle Shoals Police Officers arrived on scene. Once the scene was deemed safe, Muscle Shoals Firemen, along with Keller EMS Personnel, began attending to a female victim with a single gunshot wound to the head. MSPD Detectives and Command Staff then arrived on scene to begin the investigation. The 22yr old victim was identified as Jalisa Lashea Box of Florence, Alabama.

Officers and Detectives learned of a domestic incident that took place inside and outside of the residence that lead to Samuel Fuqua shooting Jalisa Box, once in the head. Fuqua then left the scene in a vehicle and traveled to Murphy Oil Gas Station where he got out on foot. At that point Fuqua made his way to Sheffield, Alabama.

In coordination with the Sheffield Police Department, the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office and several members of the public, MSPD learned of Fuqua’s whereabouts in the city of Sheffield. The Sheffield Police Department acted quickly on information obtained from the public and apprehended Fuqua at a residence on 8th Ave in Sheffield. Samuel Fuqua was then taken into custody and transported to the Muscle Shoals Police Department without incident. At this time Muscle Shoals Police Department Detectives are working on obtaining a Warrant of Arrest for Samuel Brycin Fuqua for the charge of Attempted Murder with other charges to follow. Fuqua is currently being held at the Muscle Shoals Police Department pending the acquisition of the warrant.

Confirmed information obtained by the Muscle Shoals Police Department from medical personnel with Huntsville Hospital, list Jalisa Box as in Stable Condition and expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Box and her family.

The Florence Police Department was notified Wednesday that a person had attempted to purchase an all-terrain vehicle and trailer valued at $31,400 from a local business.

The business was suspicious of the transaction and notified the Florence Police. Detectives began an investigation and learned Camden Rainey had obtained credit using the stolen identity of a resident of New York. It was discovered that Jamal Gilbert was also involved in the theft plan. Gilbert and Rainey were taken into custody after completing the fraudulent transaction at a Florence Boulevard business.
Camden Rainey, 19, of Huntsville, was arrested and charged with theft of property in the first degree, four counts of possessing a forged instrument in the second degree, identity theft, and forgery in the third degree. Jamal Gilbert, 22, of Athens, was arrested for criminal conspiracy to commit theft of property 1st degree. Both are currently being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Center. Rainey has a $71,000 bond, and Gilbert has a $15,000 bond

TUSCUMBIA — STILL LOOKING FOR ANSWERS — Who murdered Mary Malone? It’s a question that investigators are still trying to find an answer to. Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan said as of Thursday there is no update in the case.

Malone was found dead inside her Davis Court home on February 7. Ruled as a homicide, police have spent weeks interviewing people in the community for possible leads, but they need more.

Logan said any information can help no matter how little. “The biggest thing for us is we want to bring justice for Mary’s family; they were very close to their mom and grandmother and they deserve closure on this,” said the chief.

Police tell the Insider the man was not injured but was highly intoxicated. The man could be heard telling police he was just trying to get to the other side.  He also had warrants at Florence Municipal Court.
