Confiscated Methamphetamine and Cocaine

RUSSELLVILLE– Police have taken a major player in the drug trafficking scene off the streets of Franklin County.

According to Investigators with the Franklin and Marion County Sheriff’s Offices, 36-year-old Marcos A. Funez was taken into custody in the city of Russellville.

Police say Funez was under investigation for drug trafficking and evidence was found that he was travelling to Russellville to distribute a large amount of Crystal Methamphetamine.

Agents took Funez into custody at the Legacy Chevron service station on U.S. Highway 43 in the city of Russellville.

Funez had in his possession approximately 12.65 Ounces of Crystal Methamphetamine as well as 3 grams of Cocaine in the powder form.

Funez is charged with Trafficking in Methamphetamine and Possession of a Controlled Substance – Cocaine.

Funez remains in the Franklin County Jail. Bail has yet to be set in the case.

George Earl Craig, of Russellville, AL, has warrants for his arrest for Attempted Murder and Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling in connection with a shooting that took place on February 7th. McKinneys make million dollar donation to UNA in honor of mom

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama College of Education and Human Sciences announced Thursday that the Human Environmental Sciences Department will now be known as the Connie D. McKinney Department of Human Sciences, Hospitality, and Design.

The new name was approved Thursday during a special executive committee meeting called by the UNA Board of Trustees. The naming was made possible by a $1 million gift from Chester McKinney, Jr. and Joe McKinney in their desire to honor their late mother, Connie. The McKinney’s gift will continue by matching future donations for many remaining naming opportunities in the department’s new location to inspire additional donors. Officials with the University say the name change was recommended in an effort to better represent the department and the areas it encompasses.

“We’re so thankful for the generosity of Chester McKinney, Jr. and Joe McKinney. Their gift in memory of their mother, Connie, will provide countless benefits for years to come,” said Dr. Ken Kitts, UNA president. “This new name will help show prospective students and others exactly what this department is all about; and it will help provide the vehicle to bring this program into the forefront,” he said.

Mrs. McKinney studied Home Economics at Florence State Teachers College, now the University of North Alabama, graduating in 1950. Her passion for helping improve the quality of life for families in her community was exemplified by her work with the Franklin County Extension Service of Auburn University. In her role as a demonstration agent, McKinney made a positive impact on those she served by providing valuable, practical information on budgeting and meal planning, modeling new appliances and hosting a weekly radio program on similar topics. The Connie D. McKinney Department of Human Sciences, Hospitality, and Design is a fitting tribute to McKinney’s dedication to the community she loved and served.

The department houses two stand-alone degree programs: a B.S. in Culinary, Nutrition, and Hospitality Management (CNH) with concentrations in Culinary Arts, Therapeutic Nutrition, Food Service Management, and Hospitality Management; and a B.S. in Human Environmental Sciences (HES) with concentrations in Child Development, Interior Design, and Merchandising. Additionally, the department actively supports the Family and Consumer Sciences secondary education program and offers a total of nine academic minors.

NW-SCC Phi Theta Kappa to hold Honors Forum on Civil Rights

RUSSELLVILLE, ALA. — The Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) Alpha Zeta Iota Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa will host an Honors Forum: A New Era of Civil Rights: How We Remember the Past, Shapes the Future, December 5, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. in the A.W. Todd Center in Russellville, Ala.

Each year Phi Theta Kappa focuses on a central honors study topic. This year’s topic is, How the World Works: Global Perspectives.

The 2016 public forum will explore the collective impact of news reporting, films, literature, and public memorials on the way the Civil Rights Movement is remembered. The panel will discuss the way these influences can shape public perception and policies.

The panelists are Kenneth Brackins, Psychology Instructor at NW-SCC; Reverend Charles Dale, Community Organizer, St. Paul’s CME; Michael McClung, English Instructor at NW-SCC; and John Pilati, owner of the Franklin County Free Press and WGOL radio station.

According to Pam Peters, advisor for the Alpha Zeta Iota Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the forum is exciting for the Phi Theta Kappa officers. “We are very excited about this forum,” said Peters. “Our officers chose the topic and we hope that it will have a positive impact on our community.”

There is no charge for admission and the public is invited to attend.

Russellville Man Stabs Wife and Son

Police in Russellville say Joel Andres-Lopez stabbed his wife 21 times and his son once in the throat.

The attack happened on St. Clair St. Police were on a domestic violence call. When they arrived they found the mother and son had been stabbed many times.

The victims were taken to the hospital, treated and released.

Joel Andres-Lopez, 36, ran away before police arrived but later turned himself in.

Allegedly Lopez attacked his wife and his teenage son tried to stop him. That’s when police say Lopez stabbed him in the neck.

He has been charged with attempted murder, domestic violence and first degree assault. He is being held on $500,000 bond.

Retired Police Captain Wyman Pounders

The Russellville Police Department is sad to announce the passing of Retired Police Captain Wyman Pounders. Captain Pounders served over 22 years at the Russellville Police Department and retired 11-20-2007.

Captain Pounders then rejoined the department as a School Resource Officer for the 2013, 2014 and 2015 school years Captain Pounders was currently serving District 1 County Commissioner for Franklin County. Capt Pounders leaves behind wife Roxann Pounders, three daughters and four grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are as follows:

Russellville Police Department issues scam alert

RUSSELLVILLE- Police have issued a local scam alert. The Russellville Police Department needs your help to stop a SCAM targeted at local businesses. The ongoing investigation claims a white male is approaching local business in an attempt to sell them insurance.

This insurance is supposed to protect them from an increase in their taxes, as well as double their existing protection against personal property losses. He also claims to have references from other business owners which have purchased a policy. This is a LIE!! The policies range from $50 to $1000.

If the business owners ask for a business card or any literature on the policy, the scam artist can not or will not provide anything to them. He has been described as very aggressive and demands payment on the spot. Russellville Police are asking anyone is approached by this man, please call the Russellville Police Department at 256-332-2230.
