BROTHERS ARGUMENT LEADS TO SHOOTING

Muscle Shoals police have released some of the details of Monday night’s shooting investigation.
On Monday, November 28, 2022, at approximately 8:30pm, Officers with the Muscle Shoals Police Department responded to a call of “Shots Fired” at a building on the corner of Wilson Dam Rd and Pershing Ave. MSPD Officers, MSFD Firemen and Medical Personnel arrived on scene and immediately began attending to two adult males. One male had sustained what appeared to a be a gunshot wound, while the other appeared to have received blunt force trauma to the head. MSPD Detectives then arrived on scene.

Once Detectives arrived on scene, information was gathered from witnesses and MSPD Officers of the two men being brothers. At some point, the two brothers began a verbal argument that led to a physical altercation where one brother was shot with a handgun and the other sustained blunt force trauma to the head. Detectives spent the late hours of the night collecting evidence and processing the scene. The incident was contained to this scene and at no point do Detectives believe any surrounding homes in the area were at risk.
Names of those involved, as well as the charges those parties could face, will be provided at a later date due to both brothers being transported to Huntsville Hospital where they are both expected to make a full recovery at the time of this release. This is considered an ongoing investigation and will be updated as more information becomes available.

22 POUNDS OF COCAINE, 2 POUNDS OF METH SEIZED IN DRUG BUST

A Muscle Shoals man, Victor Hernandez Garcia, 32, of 2219 East 6th St., is in jail after a drug bust by a multi-agency drug investigation comprised of the following departments:
Colbert County Drug Task Force
Colbert County Sheriff’s Department
Muscle Shoals Police Department
Russellville Police Department
Madison County Narcotics Unit
ALEA
DEA

Garcia was found to be in possession of 22 pounds of cocaine, 2 pounds of methamphetamine, various drug paraphernalia, two firearms, and $29,000 in US currency. He has been charged with two counts of Trafficking Drugs.
Authorities tell the Shoals Insider the total value of the drugs seized exceeded $375,000.
MSPD is giving special recognition to its K-9 Officer Bane for his role in helping Drug Agents and Officers locate these dangerous drugs.
Garcia is being held in the Colbert County Jail on a $50,000 bond. Federal immigration agents have also placed a hold on Garcia.

SHOALS HOSPITAL WAS ON LOCKDOWN WEDNESDAY MORNING DUE TO THREAT

MUSCLE SHOALS– Shoals Hospital on Avalon Avenue has been on a soft lockdown Wednesday morning due to threats to hospital staff.

The soft lockdown for a CODE SILVER has now been lifted.

Authorities say there was no type of active shooter and the lockdown was entirely taken out of an abundance of caution.

Muscle Shoals police said a patient died at the hospital and when the staff called to tell the family, they got upset.

Police say that the hospital has been given an all-clear around 11 am.

Hospital staff use the Emergency code due to a firearm a CODE SILVER.

SUSPECT IN MUSCLE SHOALS CAR THEFT ARRESTED

MUSCLE SHOALS– Authorities have arrested a suspected car thief. Police say Matthew Butler is now in custody in the Muscle Shoals Jail.

At approximately 2:00 pm today members of the MSPD Detective Division, along with Investigators and Deputies of the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office, effected the arrest of Matthew Jacob Butler, 20, at a residence in northern Lauderdale County.

Authorities say Butler was arrested without incident.

The arrest comes as a result of Butler’s suspected involvement in a vehicle theft case in the city limits of Muscle Shoals on January 29th, 2020.

The vehicle was quickly recovered by Deputies of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office on February 1st 2020, in rural Franklin County.

Butler has been served with a felony Theft of Property 1st Degree Warrant, as well as numerous outstanding warrants in Lauderdale County.

Butler is waiting to be transferred to the Colbert County Jail.

COPELAND RETIRES FROM MUSCLE SHOALS POLICE DEPARTMENT

MUSCLE SHOALS- Officer Chris Copeland retires today from the Muscle Shoals Police Department.

Chief Clint Reck thanked Copeland for years of exemplary service to the citizens of Muscle Shoals.

Copeland served over 28 years in the capacity of Patrol Officer, Drug Task Force and School Resource Officer.

“His dedication and loyalty have served us well. Thank you for your service and best wishes on your retirement,” said Reck.

Second victim dies in Muscle Shoals house fire

MUSCLE SHOALS– A second victim in a Muscle Shoals house fire has died.

Officials tell ShoalsInsider.com that Anthony Burcham, 54, and Glenna Carney, 96, have both died due to injuries received in the house fire at 403 Dearborn Avenue.

According to Muscle Shoals Fire Investigator Brian Stafford the fire originated in the kitchen.

“We had to go in through a bedroom window,” said Stafford. “The fire has been ruled accidental as the fire started in or around the cooktop stove,”

Firefighters were on the scene within a couple of minutes after receiving the call around 12:45 am Saturday.

Both victims were transported to Helen Keller Hospital and one was later airlifted to the UAB Burn Unit.

Stafford says one victim was found in a bedroom and the other victim found in another area of the home.

Muscle Shoals fire officials would like to thank Deputy State Fire Marshall Greg Pinkard for his assistance in the investigation that lasted until late Saturday.

Muscle Shoals Fire Chief Shawn Malone said, ‘Our guys did an excellent job utilizing the training we’ve been given, I also want to thank the police department for their work in the rescue,”

According to the Alabama State Fire Marshall’s website these two casualties mark the 31st and 32nd fire fatalities in the state.

Muscle Shoals and Sheffield Police work together to capture suspect

MUSCLE SHOALS- Detectives in Muscle Shoals are thanking Sheffield police for their assistance in apprehending a burglary suspect.

Muscle Shoals police say Bobby Preston Anderson, 39, of 302 East 5th Street, Sheffield, has been arrested on felony burglary and theft charges.

Anderson is charged with the August 5th burglary of a Buena Vista Avenue residence.

Detectives from both departments made the arrest.

Coan retires after 39 years of service

MSPD Investigator Lanny Coan

On February 8, 1979, Lanny Coan was hired as a police officer at Muscle Shoals Police department. Things were a lot different than they are today. Minimum wage was $2.90 and Three’s Company and Dallas were popular television shows. Johnny Carson was still hosting late night tv.

Coan, who has seen a lot of changes, worked a year at Sheffield prior to coming to Muscle Shoals Police Department. Today, January 31st, Coan retires as Chief Investigator after working 39 years at Muscle Shoals.

“Lanny served the citizens of Muscle Shoals very well,” said Colbert County District Attorney Bryce Graham Jr. “He was always good to work with and I wish him all the best as he moves into this next chapter of his life,”

Prominent Tuscumbia attorney William R. Hovater said, “Even though we were adversaries, Lanny always conducted himself professionally as a law enforcement officer and was a straight shooter,”

“Lanny always had a no-nonsense approach that I really learned to appreciate,” said Hovater.

Coan, who was born and raised in Leighton, Alabama, is a devout Crimson Tide fan and a Corvette owner. Coan an avid equestrian also spent several years raising horses.

Coan tells the Insider that he plans to spend time with his grandchildren and his new Shihtzu. Her name is Maddie.

Hats off to Lanny for his almost 40 years of service to the citizens of Muscle Shoals.

Skimmers placed on Listerhill Credit Union ATM’s

MUSCLE SHOALS–Authorities are searching for this man who may have placed skimming devices on two Listerhill ATM’s in the Shoals Area.

Detectives tell ShoalsInsider.com that two skimming devices, which collect debit card account numbers and PIN numbers, were placed on two ATM’s, one at Listerhill Credit Union on North Woodward Avenue (Drive-thru only) and the other at Listerhill Credit Union on Hough Road in Florence.

According to police the devices were placed around on the ATM’s around 8:00 am and removed around 11:00 am Sunday.

Listerhill tells the Insider that 48 cards were used during this time period. Listerhill is in the process of canceling the affected cards and sending new ones as a precaution.
