FLORENCE – Investigators are awaiting the results from an autopsy in the weekend shooting death of a Florence man.

Florence police identified the victim as Jeffery C. Cherry. He was killed in the Saturday morning shooting at a west Florence residence.

Police have charged Derrick D. Turnley, 42, Florence, with murder, police Sgt. Greg Cobb said.

“We are still working to locate witnesses and to speak with them,” Cobb said. “We are not looking for any other suspect in this case.”

The shooting occurred at 2 a.m. at a residence in the 500 block of Long Lane, police said.

Cobb said police responded to a 911 call at the residence and found Cherry had been shot. Florence Fire Rescue and Shoals ambulance workers determined he had died at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kevin Jackson at 256-760-6557 or text a tip to 274637 using the keyword FPDTIP, plus the message, Cobb said.

Cherry’s body was taken to the state forensics lab in Huntsville for an autopsy, but Cobb said it may be late next week before results are available due to the holiday season.

On Monday, June 25, 2018, detectives following up on leads in the case developed information that Hannah B. Burrows, an 18-year-old white female from Tennessee, and Jesse James Parker, a 31-year-old black male from Tennessee were involved in Mr. Cobb’s death.

Detectives found that the two were possibly staying in a Memphis, Tennessee Hotel. Our investigators traveled to Memphis last night and located both subjects. Based on evidence developed in this case warrants were issued for both subjects charging them with the murder of Devan Cobb. Both were taken into custody without incident earlier this morning.

Additionally, a search warrant was executed in Tennessee at the hotel where the two were staying which resulted in additional evidence important to this case.

Both Ms. Borrows and Mr. Parker are being held without bond in the Shelby County Tennessee Jail awaiting extradition. An extradition hearing will be held tomorrow morning at 9am in Tennessee.

As of this press release, Mr. Cobb’s vehicle is still missing and we ask that the community continue to be vigilant as we continue to search for this vehicle.

This investigation is still active as detectives work to gather additional information and verify certain facts that will be important to this case. We ask that anyone who might have had contact with Mr. Parker and/or Ms. Borrows contact the Florence Police Department at 256-768-2728.

Florence police would like to thank Muscle Shoals Police Department, the Memphis Police Department, and the Memphis Area FBI Safe Streets Task Force for their assistance in these arrests.

The public is also to be commended for their tips provided in this case.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

“Ms. Staten’s body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy,” said Cobb.

“From all outward appearances, she appears to have been shot once,” Cobb continued.

Some have speculated Bailey and Staten were involved romantically.

Officers learned of the shooting while doing a welfare check late Sunday night at a nearby home.

Bailey, who according to courthouse records has prior arrests and convictions, is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond on a single charge of murder.

Florence Municipal Judge Chris Smith has placed a hold on Bailey where he must appear in city court prior to making bond.
