The case of a Sheffield mother that police say tried to drown her 10-year-old son in the bathtub after pouring bleach on the young child, will now move forward after she was indicted by a Colbert County grand jury.

Ashley Elizabeth Jones, 34, was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.

The child’s father said the child called him wanting to leave his mother’s home. The father said when he arrived at the mother’s home the child came running to the car with only his Xbox and his clothing. This according to court documents.

The 10-year old told police that the mother held his face underwater for what he believed was close to 45 seconds. He said he then had to play dead to get his mother to stop holding him underwater. After that the mother reportedly locked him in a closet for “roughly 3 hours”. This according to the criminal complaint filed by police.

Investigators with Sheffield PD said in the affidavit that the child had “scrapes and bruises” on his body. The abuse reportedly started on April 15 and lasted until his father picked him up on April 21, according to court documents.

Ashley Elizabeth Jones was released from the Colbert County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Jones is set to be arraigned on June 18th at 8am before Judge Kyle Brown.

Authorities arrested a couple who were living in a tent at Alloys Park for aggravated child abuse.

On Saturday, June 17th, Deputies and Investigators with the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office were requested to respond to North Alabama Medical Center for a possible case of child abuse. This according to Colbert County Sheriff Eric Balentine.

“When Investigators arrived at the hospital, they found a 9 year of male child severely malnourished weighing 37 pounds. The child also had bruises on his body, blood coming from his ear, and maggots protruding from diffrent areas of his body,”

said Balentine.

“This is just heartbreaking to see children living in this type of condition in Colbert County. I want to make sure that justice is served,” said Balentine.

Authorities determined that the family was staying at the primitive campsite of Colbert Alloys camping area in a tent.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the parents were still on scene at the hospital, with two younger children with the yougest being three months old.

Colbert County DHR was notified and assisted in the investgation and took custody of the children.

Due to the severity of the 9-year-old childs condition he was transported to Children Hospital in Birmingham for further extensive treatment and evaluation.

Investigators were able to secure a search warrant for the campsite. Investigators located the tents the family were staying in for approximatly the past two weeks.

Based on the findings of the investigation Deja-Ariaha Geraldine Bankhead, 27, (mother) and Demariez Lavonski Mitchell, 28, (step-father) were arrested and placed into the Colbert County Jail for the charge of Aggravated Child Abuse 26-15-3.1.

Investigators served warrants on the two on Sunday.

The two are being held in the Colbert County Jail on a $50,000 Bond. But must first see a judge before release.

FLORENCE–Police arrested Marieo Foster on Friday following an investigation into child abuse. The incident was reported by the Florence City School System. Foster is accused of striking a 10 year old child and causing injury to the child. In this case, according to police, the parent took disciplining a child too far. Injuries were identified throughout the child’s’ body.

Based on the injuries, their frequency, and location, detectives are confident that they were no accident and that Mr. Foster intended to hurt the child. Lauderdale DHR was contacted and the child was placed in protective custody pending their investigation. Foster was arrested without incident and was booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Center. He was released on bail totaling $5,000.
