GUN FOUND IN BACKPACK AT CHEROKEE ELEMENTARY
According to Colbert County School Superintendent Chris Hand, a gun was found in a students backpack at Cherokee Elementary.
“The teacher, principal and SRO all responded quickly and effectively in securing the firearm and beginning a thorough investigation,” said Hand.
Hand continued, “The student involved in this incident, along with the weapon, have been removed from the campus and turned over to law enforcement officials,”
In a prepared statement, Hand said the students and staff of Cherokee Elementary school and Cherokee High School are safe.
Also, Cherokee Elementary School and Cherokee High School have been taken out of “Heightened Awareness” at this time.
Cherokee High School was placed on “Heightened Awareness” as a precautionary measure.
