TROOPERS RELEASE INFORMATION ON FATAL CRASH

NEWS ALERT TUSCUMBIA

A single-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 1:37 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, has claimed the life of a Tuscumbia teen. The 17-year-old was fatally injured when the 2007 Toyota Camry that the juvenile was a passenger in, left the roadway and struck an embankment. After the initial impact, the Toyota overturned, struck a utility pole and then a culvert. The teen was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota, another 17-year-old also of Tuscumbia, was injured and airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. A 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, both of Tuscumbia, who were additional passengers in the Toyota, were also injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The crash occurred on Woodmont Drive near Ponderosa Drive, approximately four miles south of Tuscumbia, in Colbert County.

State Troopers continue to investigate the crash. /JR

LOUISIANA MAN ARRESTED AFTER HIGH-SPEED CHASE

NEWS ALERT TUSCUMBIA Authorities have confirmed to Shoals Insider that a Louisiana man is in custody in the Colbert County Jail after leading deputies on a chase that reached speeds of over 100 mph at around 9pm Monday. Jesse Juhas, 24, of Madeville, Louisiana, was arrested on Hwy 72 near Hollywood Drive in Tuscumbia. The chase began on Hwy. 43 in Muscle Shoals. AsJuhas was charged with eluding a law enforcement officer and other charges are pending. This according to law enforcement officers. He’s being held in the Colbert County Jail.

FORMER POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON IN PEDESTRIAN DEATH

A former Tuscumbia police officer was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2022 death of a pedestrian struck by a police cruiser the officer was driving while intoxicated.Jay Steward received the sentence in the Oct. 10, 2022, death of Terry Hinton, who was struck and killed while Hinton was checking his mailbox.Steward had wanted the sentence split, rather than to serve all 20 years in prison, but Colbert County Circuit Court Judge Kyle Brown said there will be no split. Steward was taken into custody to begin serving his sentence immediately after the hearing.Brown said the police vehicle Steward was driving while off duty was going approximately 90 mph.Steward initially was charged with reckless murder in the case but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Aug. 13.He apologized to family and friends of Hinton’s during the hearing.”What I did was take a great man from you all,” he said. “I made a horrible mistake and made decision to do what was wrong.”

Truck Crashes Into Tuscumbia Bar

Stagger Lee’s on Highway 43 in Tuscumbia had significant damage after a truck ran into the building. They will be closed until further notice.

Tuscumbia credit union robbed

TUSCUMBIA–(SHOALS INSIDER)–Authorities tell the Shoals Insider TVA Community Credit Union, located on the corner of 6th Street and Broad St, was robbed this afternoon.

Authorities tell the Insider the robbery occurred around 1:43 pm.

Police are asking for the public’s help. The suspect is described as a white male, tall and slim build with short blonde hair.

The suspect was reportedly wearing an old worn out blue long sleeve shirt, old blue jeans, and an old white ball cap.

Officials say the suspect has tattoos on his face and hands and was carrying a blue or green disposable bag.

Police say the suspect left on foot going North on Broad Street.

Authorities say no weapon was used and no one was injured.

Homicide Victim Identified

Wanda Ivey

The woman who was murdered in in Colbert County has been identified by the Colbert County Sheriff.

The Woman’s name is Wanda Ivey, 47. She was killed at her home on Blue Road in Tuscumbia, AL on Sunday.
The Sheriff’s department has a man in custody, Timothy Warhurst. No charges have been filed but he is being questioned.
Neighbors of Ivey heard a gunshot around 1:00 pm on Sunday.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s department, Madison police and New Hope police found a man digging a grave near Paint Rock River. Ivey’s body was found in the back of Warhurst’s truck. Officials say Warhurst was caught with the shovel in his hand on County Road 500 in Woodville.
