MONTGOMERY— Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that former Jefferson County District Attorney Charles Todd Henderson today received a two-year sentence, which was suspended for a term of six months in jail followed by 12 months of probation. Henderson was convicted of first-degree perjury on October 20, 2017. Henderson was elected District Attorney in 2016, but due to his indictment in January of 2017, he was barred from assuming the office and his subsequent conviction rendered him ineligible.

According to the sentence, if Henderson violates the terms and conditions of his probation, he will be remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections to serve the remainder of the two-year balance of imprisonment. In addition, he was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, a $1,000 Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Fund assessment, and a $100 bail bond fee. The charges arose from testimony Henderson gave prior to his election, in a domestic relations case in Jefferson County. Henderson had served as a guardian ad litem for a child whose custody was at issue in the case. The testimony involved questions about an undisclosed relationship Henderson developed with the child’s mother prior to his appointment. He was asked whether he had spent the night with the woman, which he denied. The Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Division presented evidence at trial that indicated he had in fact spent the night with the woman, to whom he now is married. The jury convicted Henderson after deliberating for less than one day. “Today’s sentence is a just and fair resolution of this case,” said Attorney General Marshall. “As a former District Attorney, I was especially proud to have my Special Prosecutions Division work to hold this defendant accountable for his shocking and appalling conduct. All officers of the court – and prosecutors in particular – must adhere to the highest standard of integrity. Those who fail to do so by breaking the law should expect to be prosecuted.”

HUNTSVILLE – Earlier this week, a one-count information was filed charging Aziz Ihab Sayyed, 23, of Huntsville, Alabama, with attempting to provide services and personnel, namely himself, to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization. Sayyed pleaded guilty Thursday.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers, U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town for the Northern District of Alabama and Special Agent in Charge Johnnie Sharp Jr. of the FBI’s Birmingham Field Office made the announcement. The guilty plea was accepted by U.S. District Judge Abdul Kallon.

Sayyed acknowledged that he bought bomb-building ingredients last year, stated his aspirations to conduct ISIS-inspired attacks on police stations and Redstone Arsenal, and attempted to form a cell to conduct violent acts within the United States. Sayyed admitted knowing that ISIS is a designated foreign terrorist organization.

Between January and June of 2017 in Madison County, Sayyed, a U.S. citizen, obtained and viewed ISIS propaganda videos depicting ISIS forces committing bombings, executions by gunshot and beheading, and other violent acts, according to the court documents. Sayyed shared the videos and expressed his support for ISIS and for ISIS terrorist attacks around the world.

Sayyed researched and learned how to make triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a highly volatile and extremely dangerous explosive material, purchased the necessary ingredients for the explosive, and professed his aspiration to use TATP in an explosive belt and/or a car bomb, according to the plea agreement.

On June 13, 2017, Sayyed met with an individual he understood to be an ISIS member. The person was in fact an undercover employee (UCE) for the FBI. Sayyed and the UCE discussed the danger of TATP, ISIS’s preference for the use of certain explosives, and Sayyed’s desire to assist ISIS, according to the plea agreement. In that meeting, Sayyed offered himself as personnel to the UCE, believing that the UCE was an ISIS member.

Sayyed’s plea agreement stipulates a 15-year prison sentence.

The FBI investigated the case in conjunction with the Huntsville Police Department and the Madison County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Henry Cornelius and Davis Barlow of the Northern District of Alabama are prosecuting this case with the assistance of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.

MUSCLE SHOALS– Republican Andrew Sorrell announced he was running for the State House of Representatives, District 3, and he hasn’t slowed down since that day. Sorrell seeks to replace Marcel Black, a 27-year incumbent Democrat, currently holds the seat.

“I decided to run for this office to give the voters of House District 3 a clear choice this election cycle: a choice between a liberal Democrat and a conservative Republican,” said Sorrell. “I believe my positions on issues and my conservative upbringing reflect the positions and upbringing of the majority of my district.”

Sorrell is a 31-year-old entrepreneur, private pilot, advanced SCUBA diver, Eagle Scout, and well-known local anti-tax activist. He grew up in Muscle Shoals and attended Webster Elementary School, McBride Middle School, and Muscle Shoals High School, graduating in 2004. Sorrell completed his 4-year Business Management degree at the University of North Alabama (UNA) in less than 2 years, finishing in July 2006.

Sorrell started his first business in his parents’ screen porch at age 16 with his brother, Matthew. In 2010, the business expanded to open a brick and mortar store. Infinity College Textbooks has now sold over 400,000 college textbooks on the Internet and currently employs 27 people. His second business, Gold, Guns, and Guitars, Inc. opened in April 2015 and has 8 employees. This upscale pawnshop is located on Florence Boulevard and has sold 3,000 guns since its door opened. Andrew also began buying rental real estate at age 19 and owns multiple rental properties, both commercial and residential.

“With the amount of job loss in Colbert and Lawrence Counties, District 3 needs a conservative, Christian small businessman who knows how to create jobs and fight higher taxes,” Sorrell added.

Sorrell and his wife Hannah reside in Muscle Shoals.

Sorrell faces Dr. Humphrey Lee in the primary election that will be held June 5th, 2018.

District 3 includes Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, Sheffield, Town Creek, Hillsboro, North Courtland, a small portion of Florence, and surrounding areas.
