MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN WIFE’S DEATH

Authorities have arrested a man in the shooting death of his wife.

On Tuesday, at around 8:00 a.m., Lauderdale County deputies responded to the 4000 block of County Rd 10, north of the Cloverdale community on a welfare check.

Once on scene deputies located a deceased female inside a residence. The female had died of an apparent gunshot wound. This according to Lauderdale County Sheriff Joe Hamilton.

During the investigation probable cause was established to charge William Cornelius Chapin II, 63, of Florence, with Murder.

Chapin is currently at the Lauderdale County Detention Center under no bond. This is customary under Aniah’s Law which allows violent offenders to be held without bail.

The victim is identified as Debra Annette Chapin, 59, of Florence. Her body has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” said Sheriff Hamilton.

Board rejects parole request from inmate

A Lauderdale County man in prison for assaulting another man with a pipe lost his bid for parole recently, authorities said.

The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles rejected the parole request from Roger Keith Thompson, 56, said Terry Abbott, spokesman for the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles.

Thompson is serving a 20-year sentence for second-degree assault, Abbott said. He has served nine years, three months of the sentence.

He was sentenced in 2011 in an incident in which he beat Donnie Poole with a metal pipe and left him for dead, Abbott said. In addition, Thompson had a history of arrests.

“Thompson previously had been sentenced to 15 years for another second-degree assault, this one in 2008, and a drug possession case in Lauderdale County,” Abbott said. “Thompson was first sent to prison in 1997 for second-degree forgery.”

Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly said Thompson’s next parole hearing is set for 2024.

Connolly said he and someone representing a victim’s rights group called Victims of Crime and Leniency spoke at the hearing.

“We believe he would pose a danger to the community,” Connolly said, adding Poole expressed relief when founding out parole had been denied.

“The victim is still suffering from the effects of the assault,” he said.
Thompson is in the Red Eagle Work Center, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

“The victim in the case is in poor health and was unable to attend the hearing so we went down and expressed his concern about Thompson being released,” Connolly said. “We believe he would pose a danger to the community.”

POLICE IDENTIFY DECEASED COUPLE, CAUSE OF DEATH

LEXINGTON- Authorities tell ShoalsInsider.com the couple that was found dead in a vehicle behind a house in rural Lauderdale county died of apparent gunshot wounds.

Investigators say James D. Ridgeway and his wife Carrie Ridgeway were found behind a home at 4410 Lauderdale County Road 456.

Authorities aren’t sure if the case is a murder-suicide or a double homicide.

TWO BODIES FOUND IN LAUDERDALE COUNTY

LEXINGTON–The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after the bodies of a man and woman were found near Lexington.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton says the bodies were found at a home on Lauderdale County Road 456.

The bodies were reportedly found in a car behind the home.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help. A car used in a burglary was caught on camera and they are pretty sure someone will recognize it.
Sheriff’s investigators just released surveillance pictures. In the distance, a larger white sedan could be seen parked in front of Q-Gas on Cloverdale Road. For some reason, it quickly speeds across the street – giving investigators and you a perfect look. Whatever spooked this person at four in the morning had them hit reverse and take off.
The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office says while inside Q-Gas – they took a small amount of cash. They believe the car might be an early 2000’s Lincoln Town Car.
