ATHENS–Weighing 302,089 pounds, one of three low-pressure turbine rotors on TVA Browns Ferry’s Unit 1 is lifted by crane for cleaning and inspection during the unit’s ongoing scheduled refueling outage. Steam from the unit’s reactor spins the turbine rotors which turn a shaft connected to the generator, creating electricity.

During the outage, the Browns Ferry team is performing maintenance, upgrades and inspections like this to improve the safety and reliability of Unit 1. The team will also load 280 new fuel assemblies in the Unit 1 reactor, preparing for the next power cycle of generating low-cost and reliable power for the Tennessee Valley.
