RUSSELLVILLE- State medical authorities have recently suspended the controlled substance certificate for a Russellville surgeon.According to documents filed with the state medical board,  an order was entered summarily suspending the Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate of Leonides V. Santos, MD, effective April 26, 2016.

The documents state Santos, “Dispensed controlled substances for no legitimate medical purpose,” and “violated the requirements for the use of controlled substances,”

It further states, “The investigation has shown probable cause to believe that there is imminent danger to the public health and safety if Dr. Santos’ controlled substance certificate is not suspended,” and “the board seeks to revoke the controlled substance certificate of Dr. Santos,”

A hearing in the matter has been set for August 17th at 1:00pm at the medical board offices in Montgomery.

In 2006, Santos paid $20,000 in disciplinary fines to the state in a case where Santos allegedly left blank pre-signed prescriptions with a nurse practitioner to prescribe controlled substances.

Dr. Santos graduated medical school in the Philippines in 1972 and has practiced medicine for over forty years.

More details as they become available.
