CRIME OF THE WEEK: In this week’s Shoals Area Crime Stoppers report, a Lauderdale County woman was killed while trying to walk across a state highway. It’s been more than a year a half since her death and no one has been brought to justice.
Wednesday, September 24th 2014, tragedy struck on Alabama 20 just three miles from the Tennessee state line.
For more than five years, Wilma Darlene Carles walked to her nephew’s hardware store for coffee and conversation.
That morning as she crossed the highway, a passing driver struck her. Carles died right there on the pavement. The driver kept going.

Over the last 18-months, tips have trickled into the State Troopers who are working the case. However, they have not been able to clearly identify a suspect.

Her nephew Randy Yaciw made this plea to the public just hours after the incident.
“I still can`t understand how someone could do that and not stop. It was bad enough finding her, but then find out somebody had just kept going, I just don`t understand it,” stated Yaciw.

State Troopers said they would like to give the family some resolution in this case by holding someone responsible.

They believe someone watching, knows the person who drove away.
