Memphis health officials have confirmed an outbreak of 6 cases of measles.
There are probably more cases in the area. “As we continue in this investigation I would not be surprised if we do see some other associated cases,”
Shelby County health officer Dr. Helen Morrow said.
There were only 9 cases of measles in Tennessee in the past decade.
The CDC declared measles eradicated in the US in 2000. But because of an anti-vaccine movement it has made a resurgence.
Measles symptoms don’t appear until 10 to 14 days after exposure. They include cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, sore throat, fever, and a red, blotchy skin rash.
People may experience:
Pain areas: in the muscles
Whole body: fever, malaise, fatigue, or loss of appetite
Nasal: runny nose or sneezing
Also common: skin rash, dry cough, pink eye, diarrhea, headache, koplik’s spots, sensitivity to light, sore throat, or swollen lymph nodes
