New law extends drivers license renewal period

aldl

MONTGOMERY – Alabama driver license holders now may renew a license up to 180 days prior to its expiration.

New legislation extends the renewal period from 60 to 180 days. The 60-day grace period after expiration will not change.

According to ALEA, this renewal option is available at all of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Driver License Examining Offices, as well as online and at probate offices.

ALEA will soon add the option to its self-serve kiosks.

Additionally, the new law exempts active-duty service members from the 180-day renewal period if they are deployed during that period and unable to renew.
