Former Lt. Governor Lucy Baxley dead at 78

RILEY/BAXLEY

Alabama’s only female Lt. Governor has died today at the age of 78. Lucy Baxley died peacefully surrounded by her family.

Baxley also served in years past as state treasurer and president of the Alabama Public Service Commission.

In 2006, she ran unsuccessfully against Bob Riley for governor with the slogan “We love Lucy”.  In that same year, Baxley also suffered a stroke that she eventually recovered from.

Gov. Bentley said in a statement that Baxley “loved Alabama and the people of Alabama,”

A cause of death was not immediately known.

Baxley was an educator and a realtor before going into public service. She was a graduate of Auburn University.

In addition to her husband Jim Smith and her son Louis, Baxley is survived by one daughter Becky Nichols; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be released.
